What is plein air painting?
En plein air is a French expression that simply means “in the open air.” It is used by artists to describe the art of outdoor painting, capturing landscapes and views in natural light. This kind of art has been a popular practice for centuries, and requires slightly different techniques to those used when painting in a studio.
Of course your equipment (easel if you use one, stool, palette, brushes, and paints etc) need to be easily transportable, and the elements have to be coped with - rain can spoil (or sometimes enhance!) a watercolour painting, wind can blow your painting off the easel !
Each year we run a selection of Plein Air sessions around Devizes. Don't be afraid to come along - we're all amateurs !
